Singapore Zoo: Ultimate Paradise for Animal Lovers

Now you might think, what is so special about Singapore Zoo. There are zoos almost everywhere in every city but what makes this one unique?

At a Glance

  • A lovely place to spend one full day with family
  • Be prepared to walk a lot. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended. Guest Services like strollers, wagons for kids and wheel chairs for adults are available inside the zoo
  • Do not club Zoo and Night Safari on the same day
  • If you are planning to visit the Zoo, Night Safari, Jurong Bird Park and River Safari during your trip, go for the combo pass ‘Park Hopper Plus‘ (at SGD 79) that covers all these activities and offers tram rides which are a must.
  • Be sure to check the timing for the various shows and the feeding sessions which are some of the best attractions. Click here to find out more. Some of the timings might change on a daily basis. Hence it is recommended to check the timings for that day at the zoo entrance.

Well, even if you have been to many zoos, you ought to visit this one! Very ornamentally designed, this zoo is not a place where animals are captivated and confined in smaller habitats. Instead, the animals live free in their natural habitats. The walking trails lead you to very exciting corners of the zoo where you can find different animals enjoying their day. You can also hop on to a guided tram if you are a bit tired and need to enjoy the view while sitting and relaxing in the tram.

The animals stay across 11 zones, each of which is very unique with very distinctive landscapes. As you wander around, you can see flying foxes, proboscis monkeys jumping from one end to the other. Some of the highlights of the zoo were the elephant show, tiger feeding, splash safari, orangutans, polar bear and other arctic inhabitants.

I truly enjoyed the elephant show as the elephants were so happy that you can sense their happiness from a distance! May be I never noticed it before, but these elephants naturally had a smiling face. They were rewarded with fruits when requested to perform tricks. If they didn’t want to, they didn’t have to.

Do Not Miss this Elephant Feeding Session While You are at the Zoo!

Splash Safari (a seal lion show) was extremely entertaining too! If you truly want to enjoy the show, then sit in the first 2 rows of the arena and be prepared to be rewarded by the sea lion with splashes of water. Be careful with your cameras as it can wet your equipment. The expressions on the sea lion’s face were absolutely priceless and I just couldn’t stop laughing.

The Polar bear in Singapore zoo is the first Polar bear in the world, which is born and bred outside the Arctic Circle. It is an absolute beauty and a must watch. The bear swims so effortlessly and looks magnanimous in water. When it wants to relax, it comes back to its den.The orangutans are so adorable! I really wanted to hug them tight. They are so cheerful and gorgeous animals. You also have a choice to enjoy Jungle breakfast with your family with the orangutans at An Meng Restaurant. Find out more here.

Next you enter into the zone where you can see rhinos, zebras and giraffes slowly strolling in their naturalistic habitats. I have never seen animals this close.

Also, do not miss the white tiger feeding session for anything. This is a spectacular feeding session and you can see the majestic tiger ferociously walking as he is fed with fresh.

It’s a great place for families and I will definitely go there again. The zoo can take anywhere from 4 hours to 7 hours as there are various feeding sessions and shows sporadically placed across the day.

  2. I love that the animals are kept in more natural habitats and not captivated. I wish all zoos were like this! Feeding elephants must be amazing, I would love to get that close to them.

wow, i would love to visit this place! I’ve been to a zoo a couple of times here in my country and I envy to see that Singapore got healthier elephants. In my country, we only have one captive elephant and he’s been in that zoo for so many decades already.. there were petitions asking the zoo to bring that elephant back to its natural habitat..
anyway, i love all your photos and it seems like you just gave us a quick tour in this zoo in Singapore!
    Thanks for sharing

  16. Wow, your photos did not have that sad air I often associate with zoos. The animals look happy, well-fed, and free. I should this place out during my next Singapore trip. Thanks, Sona!

  17. We were not aware of this zoo in Singapore. Loved your pictures. It was like a mini African Safari to us. You are so close to the Orangutans I wonder if they tried gimmicking or teasing you? 🙂

  18. Ami Bhat says:

  23. Janine Good says:

I love this. The animals look content and not stressed. Zoos are some of my fave places to go so long as the animals have large areas to roam freely and look happy. I would love to go to this zoo someday.

  24. Ana Ojha says:

This zoo looks absolutely fun to visit! Recently I visited Chicago Lincoln’s zoo and absolutely loved it!

  25. EG III says:

I’m usually not a big fan of zoos but it’s good to see the care that has gone into the animals at the Singapore zoo…and it’s pretty awesome that they have a polar bear born outside of the arctic region living and thriving there!

  26. Wow! Such great animal photos at the Singapore zoo! I bet it was absolutely mesmerizing! Love the pics too 🙂

  27. Shane says:

This is one place in Singapore I sadly didn’t make it to. Breakfast with the orangutans would have been amazing!

  28. Theresa says:

Wow, these photos are incredible. I haven’t been to Singapore in many years. My children would love this.

  29. Your animal photography is amazing! I am so jealous! This zoo seems to have such a great variety.

  30. Oh my, The elephant exhibit looks like so much fun. Your photo are beautiful and I can only imagine what an experience it was.

  31. Alberto C. says:

I had no idea that this zoo existed, but I would LOVE to visit when I go to Singapore, I’m obsessed with animals since I was a child!
I’m glad to hear that it’s a natural habitat zoo, it looks like there’s some many things to do and explore!

  32. Joanna says:

The zoo looks great and it’s good that they have so much space for animals but still… I am against keeping animals enclosed, outside their natural habitat. I can see that they have tried to recreate the right environments but a lion or a tiger still won’t be able to run for miles in the savannah.

  33. It looks like an amazing place! Especially because animals are in their natural habitat and aren’t captive, that is important according to me. Soft spot for the elephants! And amazing pictures by the way 🙂

  34. The Editor says:

Singapore Zoo is one of the best places to visit in the city, and totally worth it. The surroundings are soo rich green and well maintained.

  36. anjuprakash says:

So glad to hear this is a natural habitat zoo, captive animals really make me feel sad! The white tiger looks so majestic, and what an amazing shot of the zebra you clicked! Would love to visit this place sometime.

  37. We went for the Night Safari at Singapore…and that was an amazing experience. Many of the animal fences are not visible clearly at night and it feels as if they are standing out in the open!

  38. Singapore is on my bucket list! I love zoos and this zoo looks amazing also, someday…

  39. onceuponadollhouse says:

What a beautiful travel experience. The exotic Zoo animals look majestic. We hope they are taken good care of at this facility.

  40. Tom says:

I’ve long heard that the “night safari” tour through the Singers Zoo was quite worthy. Did you get a chance to do that? As for the shows, I’ve long wondered how the animals are treated.

    1. Sona Sethi says:

Yes I have been to Night Safari! It was really awesome! Though I wouldn’t recommend to do both the Zoo and Night safari on the same day. I would like to have it split across a few days. 🙂

  41. Mimi B says:

That looks like an amazing place to visit! I would find it amazing to feed elephants. If I ever get to that part of the world, I will not forget that this is an experience not to be missed.

    1. Sona Sethi says:

Thank you! Elephant feeding is a lot of fun. You can get very close to the elephants and pat them too! 🙂

  42. Wow! I can’t believe you are able to get that close to the orangutans! That zoo looks amazing. I love that the animals are not so confined. Those elephants certainly did look like they were laughing. Love this!

    1. Sona Sethi says:

Thank you! I am not a Zoo person as t makes me feel really sad about animals confined in limited space. This one is really different. Animals are really comfortable and the Soo has enough space for everyone including us.😊

  43. My friend is in singapore right now so I emailed her your link. I hope she goes. I am in love with your photography.

    1. Sona Sethi says:

Thank you Terri! Yes, this zoo is highly recommended. Your Friend will definitely enjoy it. It needs almost the whole day.😍
